Should I buy a timber-framed colombage house or new build?

Both work, the trade-off is different. New build (neuf) carries 2 to 3 percent notary fees, the standard décennale guarantee, and the lowest energy bill, but the smallest stock of period charm. Timber-framed colombage houses, the historic Alsatian style documented since the 12th century according to French Moments, demand a developer who masters lime mortar, oak repair and DPE-compliant insulation. AJO has completed 24 heritage restorations since 1992 and structures the work around the Architecte des Bâtiments de France (ABF) when the building lies in a protected perimeter.
